Order Summary

  • • Roof area: 2,000 sq ft
  • • Squares needed (with 10% waste): 22.0 squares
  • • Bundles to buy: 88 bundles of architectural shingles
  • • Estimated individual pieces: ~2,904 shingles

💡 Tip: Order 10-15% extra for waste, cuts, and future repairs. Steep or complex roofs may need 15-20% extra.

💡 Note: 1 roofing square = 100 sq ft. Standard 3-tab shingles: 3 bundles per square. Architectural: typically 4 bundles per square.

How Many Bundles of Shingles Do I Need?

The number of shingle bundles depends on your roof area and shingle type. If you haven't measured your roof yet, use the roof area calculator for standard rectangular roofs, or draw your roof outline to measure L-shaped and irregular footprints before coming back here.

With your roof area in hand:

  • 3-Tab Shingles: 3 bundles per roofing square (100 sq ft). A 2,000 sq ft roof = 20 squares = 60 bundles.
  • Architectural Shingles: Usually 4 bundles per square due to heavier weight. 2,000 sq ft = 80 bundles.
  • Waste allowance: Add 10-15% for standard roofs, 15-20% for complex roofs with multiple hips, valleys, or dormers.

Each bundle typically contains about 33 shingles (21-26 full-size for architectural). Always round up — partial bundles are not usually sold, and extras are valuable for future repairs.

Shingle Calculator FAQ

How many bundles of shingles per square?
Standard 3-tab shingles come 3 bundles per roofing square (100 sq ft). Architectural (dimensional) shingles are heavier and thicker, requiring 4 bundles per square (industry standard, ARMA - Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association). Always check the manufacturer label for the exact coverage per bundle.
How much waste should I add for shingles?
Add 10% waste for simple gable roofs, 15% for roofs with moderate complexity (valleys, dormers), and 20% for complex hip roofs or roofs with many penetrations. Starter strips and ridge caps are separate — do not count them as waste.
What is the difference between 3-tab and architectural shingles?
3-tab shingles are a single flat layer, last 20-25 years, and cost less. Architectural shingles have two or more laminated layers for a dimensional look, last 30-50 years, offer better wind resistance, and cost 20-40% more per square.
How many squares of shingles do I need?
Divide your total roof area (in square feet) by 100 to get roofing squares. A 2,400 sq ft roof needs 24 squares. Add your waste percentage on top — for example, 24 squares + 15% waste = about 28 squares to purchase.
